How images or videos can be used in ESL class-room/Digital story telling:

Strong question:
  1. Have you ever imagine how the first well was created? if not think and write?(oral  presentation or one can write here)

  1. Look at the picture and write a story with them.

During: we can do the following activities during the video presentation.
 1.       Freeze framing and prediction.
What would you do if you were in place of the king to solve the problem?

2. Silent viewing activity: Show the video with audio ask them to predict
3. Sound on and vision off activity or Dubbing activity: Ask the students or trainee teachers to listen and draw a picture of what they listen

4. Repetition and role-play (write the conversation)

After viewing:
 1.      Reproduction activity: Ask the students or trainee teachers to re-tell the story in their own words.
 2.      Conducting discussions.

I would teach a story to my students using videos/captured images with the techniques mentioned above same strategies can also be followed to train teachers during in-service training .It would make the students/teachers listen ,read, write , speak and think to solve the problems during the activity.

Visualisation Exercise
Narrate the following to your class.
It is early morning. And, it is your birthday. You are very excited. You open your eyes. You can’t believe what you see. You rub your eyes again. He smiles at you and wishes you “Happy Birthday”. It’s none other than Harry Potter! With a twinkle in his eyes, he says “I’ve got a surprise for you”! “Hop along”! Both of you get on the broom and whoosh…you fly out of the window. You can feel the wind against your face. Harry Potter turns back at you and says, “I will take you to another land”. Descending towards the path below, he says,” Look to your right”. You turn and see a handsome man. He has long flowing best clothes, a crown on his head, a long sword that shines against the sun. Beside him you see a beautiful woman. Her face partially shadowed by the rich cover over her. There are many soldiers around them and thousands of people working. It seems they are building something, something very huge and long. It looks like a wall with watchtowers. You are now walking along as you watch them work. You look ahead and see other people are taking their cattle to the fields. You hear a lot of mooing and the clatter of bells. You can see people wearing triangle shaped hats. As you walk along, you see elderly people drinking something hot from their small bowls. They are laughing and chatting. One of them looks at you and smiles. You smile back. Suddenly your attention is drawn towards the laughter of small children. You look and see across on the fields, the children are running about and holding a long string in their hands and looking up and having a great time. You look up and try and see what is at the end of the string. There is a loud bang. You are frightened! But then you look up and find that it has become night. Just like magic, you see the pretty rainbow colours in the sky and the lanterns swinging on the poles. People everywhere are dressed beautifully in nice shiny clothes. You see the bright colours- red, and yellow, pink, purple.
End the visualisation exercise. Tell students to open their eyes slowly and relax.

In the poem, “On Killing a Tree” by Gieve Patel, the poet wants to say something about the cutting of trees. According to him, it will take too much time to kill a tree. It is not just a simple jab: a quick stab or blow: to do the job. The tree has grown slowly consuming the earth: eating and drinking from it: rising out of the earth, feeding upon the crust of the earth, absorbing: taking in: innumerable years of sunlight, air water, out of the trees’ leprous hide: resembling the skin of a leper (here) refers to the discolored bark of the tree: the newly formed leaves begin to sprout.
A woodcutter may hack: cut or chop with repeated and regular blows: and chop, but still this alone will not do the job. The tree does not seem to feel any kind of pain because the bleeding bark seemed to heal all the time. The trunk of the tree from close to the ground will produced curled green twigs that will rise from the miniature bows. If their growth is not checked, then they will expand again and grow to their former sizes.
The most important thing to do while killing a tree is to ensure that the root is pulled out of the anchoring: source of security and stability: earth. The tree is to be rope-tied and pulled out: snapped out: pulled apart or break with a snapping sound: or it should be pulled out entirely from the earth cave.
Finally, the strength of the tree will be exposed, from the very source where the white and wet, which is the most sensitive part which has been hidden for many years inside the earth. Then it is only a matter of scorching: burning superficially so as to discolor or damage the texture of: and choking: here drying up: in the sun. In the end, the tree will go through a process of browning, hardening, twisting and withering. Then ultimately, the tree gets killed.
